Moonshine & Distilleries

Moonshine went legal in these mountains and never looked back. What used to travel in mason jars by moonlight now pours openly across twenty tasting rooms — white lightning, flavored shine, small-batch whiskey, even bourbon with awards on the shelf. Here's every one worth knowing, and how to taste your way through without losing the afternoon.

Gatlinburg tasting rooms

The downtown cluster — several of these sit within an easy walk of each other, which is exactly the point.

Ole Smoky Distillery — The Holler Locale Pick

4.7 · 6,045 reviews · Gatlinburg, TN

The one that started it all — Tennessee's first legal moonshine distillery, and still the busiest porch in Gatlinburg. There's usually live music out front, working stills inside, and a tasting counter running flavors from throat-warming original to dessert-sweet. If you visit exactly one distillery, make it this one.

Hours Open daily, morning to late eveningPhone (865) 436-6995

Sugarlands Distilling Company

4.5 · 4,567 reviews · Gatlinburg, TN

The Holler's polished rival up the street, and the connoisseur's counterargument. Sugarlands leans craft — well-made shine and sippin' creams poured in a big, handsome tasting hall. Plenty of locals will quietly tell you these are the better bottles.

Hours Open daily; confirm current timesPhone (865) 325-1355

Ole Smoky — The Barrelhouse

4.6 · 1,876 reviews · Gatlinburg, TN

Ole Smoky's grown-up sibling, dedicated to whiskey rather than shine. Barrel-aged pours in a darker, quieter room — the natural second stop once the Holler's mason jars have warmed you up.

Hours Open daily; hours vary seasonallyPhone

Bootleggers Homemade Wine

4.6 · 543 reviews · Gatlinburg, TN

The palate-cleanser on the crawl: small-batch homemade-style wines instead of high-proof shine. A good stop for the person in your group who's been politely declining moonshine all afternoon.

Hours Open daily; check aheadPhone (865) 221-1589

Pigeon Forge

Parkway stops, a historic mill, and a couple of name-based surprises.

Ole Smoky — The Barn

4.6 · 2,345 reviews · Pigeon Forge, TN

Ole Smoky's Pigeon Forge outpost at The Island, done up barn-style with rocking chairs and the same deep flavor lineup. If you're not making it to Gatlinburg, this covers the moonshine box without the drive.

Hours Open daily, into the eveningPhone

Old Forge Distillery — Historic Old Mill

4.7 · 1,876 reviews · Pigeon Forge, TN

Spirits made beside a gristmill that's been grinding since the 1800s, using grains from next door. The Old Mill square around it — restaurants, shops, the creek — makes this the most atmospheric tasting stop in Pigeon Forge.

Hours Open daily; confirm timesPhone (865) 774-4126

Drop Zone Distilling Company

4.8 · 432 reviews · Pigeon Forge, TN

Veteran-owned, small-batch, and carrying one of the best ratings on this page. The kind of under-the-radar room where the person pouring is often the person who made it — ask questions, they love it.

Hours Open daily; check aheadPhone (865) 219-3219

Moonshine Depot

4.3 · 543 reviews · Pigeon Forge, TN

A no-frills stop for working through classic moonshine flavors on the Parkway. Less spectacle than the big names, shorter waits to match.

Hours Open daily; hours varyPhone

Moonshine Mountain Coaster

4.5 · 3,456 reviews · Pigeon Forge, TN

Full disclosure: this one is a mountain coaster, not a bar — the name just insists on keeping it in this guide. It's a genuinely fun night ride down a lit forest track, and a solid designated-driver reward at the end of a tasting day. Nobody pours anything.

Hours Daily into the evening; night rides are the specialtyPhone (865) 365-1588

Savannah Bee Company

4.5 · 432 reviews · Pigeon Forge, TN

The other tasting bar on this page that won't get you carded: honey. Flights of varietals, mead on offer, and a shop worth browsing — a sweet interlude between high-proof stops, and the one place here kids get their own samples.

Sevierville & beyond

The deepest bench of small operations — plus a couple of stops worth the country drive.

King's Family Distillery

4.8 · 567 reviews · Sevierville, TN

The bourbon stop. King's has hardware on the shelf to back up the pours, and a family-run tasting room that treats whiskey like the point rather than the sideline. Serious drinkers should start here.

What locals know

  • Downtown Gatlinburg is the walkable leg of the trail — the Holler, Sugarlands, the Barrelhouse, and Bootleggers can all be strung together on foot. Park once, taste in a loop.
  • Sort out your designated driver before the first counter, not after. Samples are small, but a full crawl adds up faster than the mason jars suggest.
  • Bring your ID even if your last carding was decades ago — every tasting room checks, every time, no exceptions.
  • Rainy day? This is the best indoor itinerary in the Smokies. So is everyone else's — expect company at the counters when the weather turns.
  • Taste in the right order: clear shine first, flavored and cream varieties next, barrel-aged whiskey last. Reverse it and everything tastes like dessert.
  • The famous names earn their crowds, but the small rooms — Drop Zone, King's, Mossback — are where you'll talk to the people who actually make the stuff.
Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Where are the Smoky Mountain distilleries concentrated?

Three clusters: downtown Gatlinburg (where several tasting rooms sit within a short walk of each other), the Pigeon Forge Parkway, and Sevierville. A few outliers in Kodak and Dandridge reward a short drive.

Can I bring the kids, or is this a 21-and-up outing?

The tasting rooms are retail shops at heart, and families wander through them all day — there's plenty of non-alcoholic browsing, and stops like Savannah Bee pour samples anyone can try. Sampling spirits, of course, requires being 21 with ID in hand.

Do I need to book a tasting in advance?

Generally no — walk-up counter tastings are the standard format here. Evenings and rainy afternoons get crowded in peak season, so mid-day on a weekday is the relaxed window.

When's the best season for a distillery day?

Tasting rooms run year-round, which makes this one of the best bad-weather activities in the Smokies. Spring and fall bring the nicest weather outside, summer brings the crowds, and winter means shorter lines at the counter.
